Final Destination is the first film of this exciting franchise that focuses on Death’s plan for everyone demise at that moment. The series had only four sequels however this year the latest installment Final Destination: Bloodlines was just released. This film was released to theaters in March 2000 from New Line Cinema from director and writer James Wong who is best known for the TV Series The X-Files and American Horror Story.

Devon Sawa, Kerr Smith, and Amanda Detmer

The film opens with high school seniors  boarding a plane for their class trip to Paris (must be nice my class justwent to Disney World) and Alex (Devon Sawa (The Exorcism of Molly Hartley [2015])) wakes up from a dream/vision of the plane blowing up with them in it and he starts ranting telling everyone to get off the plane and of course no one believes him, gets into a fight with Carter (Kerr Smith (The Forsaken [2001])) and both are escorted off the plane with, Carter’s girlfriend Terry (Amanda Detmer). However, their brawl incorporated others into the malady Tod (Chad Donella Saw 3D [2010])), and always wrong place wrong time character Billy (Seann William Scott (Bloodline [2018]), oh, and a teacher Mrs. Valerie Lewton (Kristen Cloke (Black Christmas [2006])), and lastly the only student the believes him Clear (Ali Larter (House on Haunted Hill [1999])). All the students sit in the lounge trying to cool tempers the plane in fact does explode which shocks and scares them. An incredible scene though not the scariest one. Afterwards, they each meet with airport officials as well as FBI agents Weine (Daniel Roebuck (31 [2016])) and agent Schreck (Roger Guenveur Smith (Tales from the Hood [1995])). The feds are the most curious about Alex, having their own suspicions about his strange descriptions a worrisome situation for them.

Everyone still doesn’t know what to make of what happened and what Alex is or how he knew. Both the remaining students and their parents keep their distance from him, it is because Mrs. Lewton is just plain scared and wants him to stay far away; especially after the memorial services (talk about quick artistic artwork on display). When Alex gets home odd things start happening and he sees the name Tod in a magazine and realizes something bad is going to happen and sure enough it does, and Tod supposedly hangs himself, which is a complex scene and downright scary. Clear teams up with Alex, as she begins to strongly believe in his visions, they break into the mortuary and encounter Bludworth (Tony Todd (Candyman [1992] – R.I.P.)) who explains that Tod really didn’t kill himself. He further explains that “Death” who came for him and that those who escaped the plane crash as Death has a plan for all of us. will be coming for each of them to finish the job. Alex tries to warn them but of course he’s still ignored and when he’s arguing with Carter again, Carter’s girlfriend Terry has had enough steps off the curb backwards and is smashed by the bus. Death’s next target is Mrs. Lewton and as Alex tries to save her he tries to get the knife out of her and it is too late, the scene has a lot of clues how her end is going to be revealed.

Tony Todd

Of course, it looks like he kills her so the FBI is looking for him since they don’t believe his story anyway and so he goes into hiding at Clear’s family cabin. Carter, Clear, & Billy go looking for him as they don’t want to be the next victim however Carter tries to kill himself by staying on the train tracks, chickens out and then Alex saves him. Since Carter was next on Death’s list it jumped to Billy with a freak shard of metal from the train and car collusion slicing off his head, so they think that Alex is next, and they all go home. Alex realizes that on the plane he switched seats and that Clear is next, so he rushes to her house and in the end saves her. The film then jumps to six months later and Alex, Carter, and Clear board a plane to Paris and arrive thinking it was all over but was it really? You’ll have to watch the end to see what happened.

Ali Larter and Devon Sawa

This film’s plot shows that you do not mess with what is initially planned in this case Alex put a wrench in “Death’s” plan, and no one was supposed to live, it’s revenge and was explained very well by Bulworth. It was the only scene Tony Todd was in, but it was and continues to be very memorable. Another interesting thing is the character names and how the writers Jeffrey Reddick (Tamara [2005]), Glen Morgan (Black Christmas [2006]), and James Wong have connections to horror. For example, it’s Alex Browning (Tod Browning) and Billy Hitchcock (Alfred Hitchcock) I know Baron would write up a whole dissertation on this topic I just wanted to bring the connection up. Speaking of Baron, this movie kind of reminds me of him. As many of you know he’s had health issues the past year and even one put him in the hospital and doctors are shocked he’s still here so in essence he’s defied “Death” which is a wonderful thing for us.

Kitchens are dangerous

As stated earlier there are 5 sequels so if you are a binge watcher why not watch the rest of the films as I’m doing right now? I just saw the latest Final Destination; Bloodlines in theater with my boyfriend. Just remember to watch out and don’t get on the bad side of the Grim Reaper
