North Carolina’s BLACKWATER DROWNING is pleased to present their video for “Devour.” The track comes off the band’s latest full-length, Obscure Sorrows, out today on Bleeding Art Collective and Blood Blast Distribution (Nuclear Blast Records/Believe)!

Comments vocalist Morgan Riley, “I wrote the lyrics for ‘Devour’ in the midst of a breakdown of a long-term friendship. I realized this person had been taking advantage of my kindness and generosity for a long time, and when I started calling them out on certain behaviors as a friend, they got increasingly more adversarial. I realized they’d never take accountability for anything they did, instead preferring to immerse themselves in yes-men and substances. ‘Devour’ is about that feeling of realizing this person was never the friend I thought they were.”

BLACKWATER DROWNING is a five-piece US melodic death metal/metalcore band from North Carolina. Forged by singer Morgan Riley and guitarist Jeremy Bennett, the band is completed by guitarist Ron Dalton Jr, bassist Aria Novi, and drummer Aamon Dalton. Since the band’s inception, BLACKWATER DROWNING has recorded two EPs and a debut album (Sonder//Satori) and has supported iconic acts such as Soulfly, Jinjer, Crypta, and many others. The band now unleashes Obscure Sorrows. Mixed and mastered by Cryptopsy guitarist Christian Donaldson (Shadow Of Intent, Suffocation, Ingested), the album features guest solos by Greg Burgess of Allegaeon and Japanese guitar virtuoso Yo Onityan as well as stunning album art by Giannis Nakos (Emperor, The Agonist, Aborted).

“…BLACKWATER DROWNING ease you into the leadoff track, ‘The Sixth Omen,’ from their upcoming second full-length album with a soft, ominous orchestral synth opening that belies the mayhem to come. This five-piece… keep the synths in the mix, but a bruising volley of melodic riffs and percussive rhythms guide ‘The Sixth Omen’ from heavy to heavier as Riley turns herself inside out vocally. The track is ultimately a well-crafted and balanced melding of drop-tuned brutality and melody-infused passages.”  Decibel Magazine on “The Sixth Omen”

“Obscure Sorrows is full of modern rhythms and punchy production, but it also has riffs for days and symphonic elements that provide melodic counterpoint instead of merely checking the box. The result is a varied but cohesive album that is damn heavy. ”  Heavy Metal Philosophy

“Obscure Sorrows stands as a deeply atmospheric and sonically punishing release that prioritizes substance over flash. It’s heavy in every sense, musically, emotionally and thematically. For listeners who appreciate metal that digs beneath the surface and commits fully to its darker identity, this is a record that doesn’t just hit hard, it lingers.”  P&L Tunes

“The melodic sensibilities are perfect, the rhythmic assault is amazing, the vocals are brutal, and the album flows beautifully. This is an album that… all lovers of melodic death metal, old and young, should pick up.”  Female Fronted Power

“Full of visceral riffing and death metal fury but also injecting it with a modern metalcore side with catchiness and clean vocals, the band brings a lot of influences to the table.” – Dead Rhetoric

“…a band that seriously deserves your attention for its ambitious blend and clear creative drive… remarkably different in its willingness to experiment and fuse genres with genuine creativity. The ambition and skill on display are far more exciting than another by-the-numbers release.”  Metal Eclipse

“…fiery over-the-top death metal anthems with a bit of a black metal attitude in the higher scowl of vocalist Morgan Riley. If you are into guitar solos, they are also serving up ample sides of shred.” – Abysmal Hymns
