Freckled Max and the Spooks [1987]
PHYSICAL MEDIA: Blu-ray
DIRECTOR: Juraj Jakubisko
WRITER: Juraj Jakubisko, Jaroslav Dietl, Joachim Hammann, Jozef Pastéka, Alan Rune Pettersson
PRINCIPAL CAST: Eddie Constantine, Ferdinand Mayne, Gerhardt Karzel, Martin Hrebeň
SYNOPSIS: FRECKLED MAX AND THE SPOOKS (PEHAVÝ MAX A STRAŠIDLÁ) – 1987, Slovak Film Institute, 97 min. Dir. Juraj Jakubisko. “It all began under the Frankenstein castle. It was my tenth year with this circus troupe, and we were passing through a bleak territory of vampires, will-o’-the-wisps and water sprites,” observes young orphan Max (Martin Hrebeň), just before he runs away and hides out in the ruins of the nearby castle. There he discovers a rogues’ gallery of lonely monsters who’ve made it their home: gruesome but loveable Alojz (Eddie Constantine, Lemmy Caution from Godard’s ALPHAVILLE); the marvelous Ferdinand Mayne (Polanski’s THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS) as Count Dracula; a wonderful, whiskey-voiced Viveca Lindfors (THE DAMNED, STARGATE) as the Countess Frankenstein; Gerhardt Karzel as the irresistibly goofy Frankenstein’s Monster named Albert; along with the ghostly white lady Elizabeth Bathory (Mercedes Sampietro) and other assorted phantoms. A bittersweet, slapstick cross between MONSTER SQUAD, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and the Island of Misfit Toys, FRECKLED MAX is a nostalgic Gothic fairytale about broken hearts and monsters who long to be loved for who they are – and a truly delightful discovery for genre fans. Beautifully restored by the Slovak Film Institute for its first-ever Blu-ray release in the U.S. through Deaf Crocodile Films and Comeback Company. In Slovak with English subtitles.

Dr. Jekyll and The Werewolf [1972]
AKA “Dr. Jekyll vs. The Werewolf”
DIRECTOR: León Klimovsky
WRITER: Paul Naschy
PRICIPAL CAST: Paul Naschy, Jack Taylor, Mirta Miller, Shirley Corrigan

Naschy was determined to get the series back on track and with his next appearance as the Wolfman he pulled out all the stops. Here, he comes to swinging seventies London, seeking a cure to his malady. Unfortunately he meets Dr Jekyll, who injects him with a serum that turns him into the lascivious killer, Mr. Hyde. In his top hat and black cloak, Hyde haunts the fleshpots of Soho, while two gorgeous women fight for possession of his wolfman soul. Top grade Euro-horror and definitely the craziest werewolf film ever. Disc includes both the Spanish cut and the rarely seen export version of the film.

Sleep [2020]
AKA “Schlaf”
DIRECTOR: Michael Venus
WRITER: Michael Venus, Thomas Friedrich
PRINCIPAL CAST: Agata Buzek, August Schmölzer, Benjamin Heinrich, Gro Swantje Kohlhof, Sandra Hüller
SYNOPSIS: Nightmare and trauma. Fear and repression. Guilt and atonement. Weaving together the emotional violence of horror with the cryptic motifs of German folk and fairy tales, Arrow Video is proud to present Sleep, the debut feature from a major new talent in world cinema.
Tormented by recurring nightmares of a place where she has never been, Marlene (Sandra Hüller, Requiem) cannot help but investigate when she discovers the place is real. Once there, she suffers a breakdown and is admitted to a psychiatric ward. Determined to discover what happened to her, Mona (Gro Swantje Kohlhof), her daughter, follows and finds herself in Stainbach, an idyllic village with a dark history. What is it that so tormented her mother, and the people of Stainbach? What is the source of the nightmares she suffers? And who is the mysterious Trude that lives in the forest?
Richly conceived and confidently told, director Michael Venus draws influence from Mario Bava, David Lynch, Franz Kafka and the Brothers Grimm, but his voice is uniquely his own. As invested in substance and story as he is in style, Venus claws his way down to the roots of what haunts a people, a community, a nation and comes up screaming.

J-Horror Rising
PHYSICAL MEDIA: Blu-ray
DIRECTOR: Toshiyuki Mizutani, Shunichi Nagasaki, Kôji Shiraishi, Takashi Komatsu, Masato Harada, Ten Shimoyama
PRINCIPAL CAST: Yûki Amami, Atsuro Watabe, Chiharu Kawai, Chiyaki Kuriyama
SYNOPSIS:
J-Horror Rising presents seven of the genre’s most distinctive titles in this limited edition set from Arrow Video.
In the ghostly pastoral horror of Shikoku, a young woman returns after many years to her rural birthplace, only to find her best friend from childhood has died by drowning when just sixteen. The dead girl’s mother, the local Shintoist priestess, has embarked on the region’s famous pilgrimage – but why is she walking backwards? The aftermath of the devasting Kobe Earthquake of 1995 creates fissures in the already fractured mind of a high-school girl in Isola: Multiple Personality Girl, allowing an unwelcome intruder to set up home in her head and leaving a volunteer worker with psychic powers to determine which of her personas is the fake one. In Inugami, a teacher finds himself drawn to a local papermaker, only to find himself the subject of some hostility from her extended family, who are rumored to be the descendants of the guardians of ancient evil canine spirits.
Megumi Okina (Ju-On: The Grudge) plays the art designer for a horror-themed videogame in the innovative St. John’s Wort, who is forced to confront her childhood traumas when her colleagues ask her to gather visual materials from the creepy gothic mansion she has inherited from her estranged artist father. Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman features the titular predatory murderess drawn from urban legend, where it turns out home isn’t the safest place for her potential child victims in this disturbing supernatural horror. A new craze for wearing ceramic masks sweeps the students of a high school, unleashing a wave of anonymous juvenile delinquency amongst the literal fashion-victims of Persona. Last but not least, the chilling Noroi: The Curse adopts a pseudo-documentary format as an investigative reporter into paranormal phenomena is forced to confront horrors beyond his wildest imagination after learning about an ancient folkloric demon.
