This is a fun review for me to do as it is for children and watching it again with my kids was a thrill. Hotel Transylvania is the first of 4 movies (I already reviewed the third a few years ago) and it was nice to go back and see how it all started, as it came to theaters in 2012 from both Columbia and Sony Pictures. I remember going to the theater with my little ones at the time they were much younger and when I streamed it recently on Netflix (for this review) they enjoyed it just as much. Therefore, to refresh one’s memory it was director Genndy Tartakovsky, who also directed the two sequels as well and written by Peter Bayham and Robert Smigel.

Scary Reading Material

Hotel Transylvania is about Drac (Adam Sandler) building a “Hotel” which is Dracula’s Castle for monsters only, among them is Wolfman, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Bigfoot, and many others entering the hotel all to celebrate Drac’s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez (The Dead Don’t Die [2019])) 118th birthday. The story reveals Drac’s wife was killed in the “human world,” so he keeps Mavis hidden away and in the castle. She was promised to see the real world on her 118th birthday so Drac conjured a village with monsters looking like humans and when they are terrible to her, she never wants to go back. In the meantime, Jonathan (Andy Samberg) makes a surprise visit and Drac freaks out, while Johnny takes everything in stride, almost oblivious.

Mavis

Drac and Jonathan

He dresses him up as Frankenhood/Johnnystein to make him look like a monster and then the shenanigans, for example, Drac told Frankenstein (Kevin James) that he’s his sixth cousin removed. One thing he didn’t account for which was bound to happen is Mavis runs into him and eventually the two fall in love, which Drac hates and makes Jonathan leave. After seeing Mavis so sad Drac realizes that he’s made a mistake and goes to get him back with some of the other monsters and they realize that they aren’t hated by the human world after all because they had a Monster Festival. Drac gets Johnathan in the daylight despite being almost burned and all is well in the end. Hotel Transylvania 2 was then created.

The Monsters, The Glasses for the Invisible Man

This was a great movie and I highly recommend the film especially watching it with your kids. It also teaches us to accept one another, which is needed in today’s world.
