***The Extreme in Any Manner Leaves a Lasting Impression! *** – Baron Craze
Well, the month of May flew by, and frankly good riddance, from a personal viewpoint, the month was a horrible month, it involved so many doctor’s visits and procedure with lengthy recovery time that made it nearly impossible for any project to move forward. While I was able to view the horror films on the Visions of Horror column, I had seen them before; this time I would listen only while pausing the movie and telling friends what was happening on the screen, the emotional conviction or lack of it in the tone – it was frankly incredible and one friend said it was eerie that I could do this marvelous trick. Hence so much work will be shifted to this month of June, there is still the possibility that the growing list of undone work can be completed before it all spirals out of control, I’m giving it all I can for the horror fans.
One very important aspect I have noticed lately is the lack of box office returns this worries me while we all know Hollywood namely the producers don’t care about quality stories anymore; we must work to support the independent projects. For the very few of Ti West (The Innkeepers) who has created X, Pearl, and soon to storm the theaters Maxxxine and Damien Leone the creator and director of Terrifier and Terrifier 2 we all need to venture out and support the genre, sometimes enduring the tropes because staying away doesn’t teach a lesson it will backfire meaning to the controllers that our beloved genre is dead and so is the fan base. Therefore, if we want more indie filmmakers to get their opportunities, we must leave the couch and venture into the world to support with our dollars their work and criticize afterwards. A note on the criticism please refrain from calling a film the worst ever, that is reserved for Shark Exorcist [2015] with a 1.3/10 rating. What sadly is becoming the norm is these filmmakers’ movies get exposure on the streaming sites, but it affects the entire crew from writers to cinematographers as we reduce the viewing to small screens to find the next Daniel Pearl (The Texas Chan Saw Massacre [1974]). It leads to less buying of physical media too, though some starting to discover their digital libraries could vanish at given moment, hence a love for the DVDs seems to happen though the costs have risen greatly.
On May 9th, the horror community as well as the sci-fi fanbase lost a titan in filmmaking, a true pioneer, and man who never lost a single dime in any of his films whether as a producer, director or writer, he helped launch numerous careers and worked with legendary actors and actress, even occasionally stepping in front of the camera for a cameo appearance done more has sincere thanks to those he helped, that icon was Roger Corman, who was 98 years-old, R.I.P.
In addition, I would like to extend a humble thanks for the well-wishes and happy birthday greetings, which was May 23 as always greatly appreciated. Since becoming ill I have read many special media posts seen many photos of the fan enjoying their own unique ways of celebrating the genre as they play letter association games with their names to identify as a stalker or animal on the prowl, but for us here at The Horror Times headquarters we take the image of the Ghost Galleon of The Dead sails have risen left the seas of turmoil and depression all thanks to encouragement of many. I’m looking forward to returning soon at one of the horror conventions.
Until next month – enjoy all the horror you can….
