It’s always a bit bittersweet when this month comes about, yes there’s plenty of Xmas-horror or Holiday Horror depending on your preferences, either way it is a countdown to the end of 2023, and in the process a look back at the year, all the anniversaries that have come and gone. Yet it allows one to think about to the treasures, pleasures and sorted nightmares that await one in 2024, as friends and fans work to plan out my viewing habits, leaving very little opportunities to choose films for myself, but that is the challenge of this column. Therefore, let’s begin, there were 21 films on the list of 59 films that previously reviewed and of which 5 are celebrating anniversaries and hence can be found in the Revisiting Past Horrors for December 2023. While the oldest film is The Mummy [1932] at 91, it is not the oldest in terms of anniversaries (those that end in 3 or 8, because folks only really count the majors, i.e. 10th; 20th; 25th and so on), that belongs to three films all celebrating their 65th, which were Macabre [1958], Corridors of Blood [1958], and The Strange World of Planet X [1958]. A few other interesting tidbits the reason Psycho [1960] is included is because the film’s title states December 11th, and other movies on the list sometimes to corresponding release date, for example The Exorcist [1973] was released on December 26th and there are six movies on the list which was appear in their rightful positions, The Nightmare Before Christmas [1993] and Black Christmas [1974] are always on Xmas Eve, while Silent Night, Deadly [1984] is on Christmas Day; the other three New Year’s Evil and Terror Train both from 1980 and lastly Bloody New Year [1987] all on the 31st, for good reason. The most popular decade 2010, with 17 films representing and the 80s followed up with sixteen, and the Headless Horsemen [2007] started us off in a way to remember Richard Moll’s passing, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is because I always enjoy that film, and the list is very transparent, though honestly seeing Clark with a hockey mask and chainsaw is hilarious.
