This is definitely a different type of movie that I would review. However, both Baron and the owner of the site asked me to help out and write the review so of course I accepted the challenge. I say “challenge” because it’s the first zombie film I’ve ever seen. The iconic George Romero, the godfather of zombie movies, started it all with this film. My nephew had the film in his vast collection, so I borrowed it from him and watched it again as I’ve only seen it once before.
As stated before the film is directed by George Romero (Dawn of the dead [1978])) and the screenwriter is John Russo (The Return of the Living Dead [1985]). It starts with Barbra (Judith O’Dea (October Moon [2005])) and her brother Johnny (Russell Steiner) walking in a cemetery looking for a gravestone. They see a person/living dead/zombie (Bill Heinzman (The Crazies [1973])) walking and soon Johnny says the iconic line everyone knows “They’re coming to get you Barbra” and we soon learn it’s the walking dead. Sadly, Johnny doesn’t survive, and Barbra runs away to a house where she encounters Ben (Duane Jones (Vampires [1986])). Barbra is in a catatonic state and can’t function as Ben starts boarding up the house to keep the living dead out. Soon they realize there are others in the house who were in the basement who don’t want them in the house well at least one of them Harry (Karl Hardman (Santa Claws [1996])). Tom (Keith Wayne) comes up with Harry however he doesn’t mind them being there. Harry goes back to the basement and boards it up which doesn’t make his wife Helen (Marilyn Eastman (Santa Claws [1996])) very happy as they have a “sick” child. Soon they realize there are too many zombies, and they try to escape and soon realize the sick child had been bitten and turns into the living dead as well. Everyone has seen this film, so this spoiler won’t come as a shock. No one survives, not even Ben who was shot thinking he was the walking dead.
Night of the Living Dead is a great movie, and it was nice to go back and see where the zombie craze started. I know it’s on every horror fan’s watch list and for me it was nice to see it again after all these years. It’s highly recommended.
