I first saw Ma when it came to theaters with my husband in May 2019 and then again during the pandemic with a couple of my girlfriends. This film makes you think about who you meet in a public setting. Ma is directed by Tate Taylor who had never directed a horror film before; he did work with Octavia Spencer before in The Help (2011) but that obviously is not horror. Ma was released by Universal Pictures and has earned $61.1 million worldwide and was produced by Blumhouse Productions.

The films starts with a mother, Erica (Juliette Lewis who was in From Dusk Till Dawn [1996]) and her daughter Maggie (Diana Silvers) who are driving back to Erica’s hometown. Maggie slowly starts to make friends at her new school and one night goes out with them. They pull up to a liquor store and since they are underage, they find someone to buy liquor for them. This person is Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer). A day or so later she invites the group of teens back to her house to “party” and that’s when she gets her nickname “Ma.” Soon we start seeing flashback of her childhood and kids making fun of her. As the movie progresses the viewers realize these teens’ parents are those who made fun of Sue Ann back in the day. Slowly “Ma” starts her revenge on the parents and ultimately on the teens that hung out at her house. I won’t go into all the details about how and what happens at the end for those who haven’t seen it yet.

I believe the whole point of this film is don’t make fun of people who are different because when they grow up you never know when you’ll cross paths with them again and who knows what will happen when you do.

Baron – I challenge you to review this as well.
